This is not confined to disease issues but includes all feed, environmental and husbandry factors that can impact on the success of poultry production. We have no affiliations with any supplier of avian vaccines, medication or equipment.

Dr Herman Bosman co-founded The Poultry Practice with Dr Jan Wicht in 2009. He qualified as a veterinarian from the University of Pretoria in 1984, and started his career as a research veterinarian at the Medical Faculty of the University of Pretoria.

Herman entered the poultry industry as a veterinarian to an integrated company where he worked for 15 years. He resides in Port Elizabeth and consults to a number of breeder, broiler and layer producers across Southern Africa.

Dr Deryn Petty qualified as a veterinarian in 1986 and has lectured at both the University of Pretoria and Witwatersrand. She specialises in biosecurity of poultry and pig farms as well as feed mills.

Deryn has completed her honours degree (with the focus on poultry), an MSc and short courses in Emergency Poultry Disease Response at Delaware University and a Lead Auditor course for FSSE 2200 at Bureau Veritas.

She has an interest in poultry nutrition and consults to a number of layer farmers, broiler farmers and breeder operations throughout Africa and South Africa.

Deryn has published and presented in the fields of poultry disease control and biosecurity, pig biosecurity, abattoir welfare, stress physiology, and feed mill biosecurity as well as emerging poultry farmer disease management and food safety.

Dr de Swardt qualified with her BVSc from Onderstepoort in 2008. From 2009 to 2016 she worked at various practices as a full time equine veterinarian in the Cape Town area.

In 2013 Dr de Swardt married and moved to Langebaan. 

In 2016 Dr de Swardt joined The Poultry Practice and is currently consulting for a large free-range layer company as well as a few commercial layer producers.

Dr Rosaly Steyn started her career in the poultry industry as a Veterinary Technologist in 2000, whereafter she worked a few years in a poultry diagnostic laboratory as well as in the poultry pharmaceutical industry. She commenced her full-time studies in Veterinary Science in 2009 and qualified as a veterinarian in 2015.

She entered the poultry industry as a veterinarian to an integrated broiler company in 2018 and joined The Poultry Practice in 2020 as a consultant.

Rosaly resides in Centurion and consults mainly for breeder and broiler producers.
